Lose Stomach Fat In Your 50s - How Many Calories Do We Need?

By:

By the time we reach our 50s, calories have almost become a dirty word, because we tend to connect them to putting on weight. Because of this, it is easy to overlook the fact they are essential for good health. Our bodies need a certain amount of calories to function. Calories are the fuel our bodies run on. Without the necessary minimum daily intake, our bodies would eventually shut down. Our hearts, brains and other bodily functions could not work. However, most of us never give it a thought, except to the extent we know we should not be having too many. But what does that mean? How many calories do we need each day and how can we know when we are taking in too many?

How To Calculate It

Your body weight and the amount of energy you are using determines the amount of calories your body needs. If you are not active - have a sit-down job or doing no physical activity - the number of calories is about 11 times you body weight. A person who weighs 120 pounds would need a daily calorie intake of 1320. Your body's need for calories increases with physical activity. For example, multiply your body weight by 15 to 17 if you are exercising 3 or 4 days a week; if you are exercising every day then you would need to multiply by about 18-20.

It is a good idea to monitor your calories intake so you will know you are staying within reasonable limits. You do not have to stress over every piece of food but you do need to be aware of the type of food you are eating and what this means in terms of calories. You can make up for the times you may have eaten or drunk to much by cutting back at the next meal. We all know you will build fat if you are not using up more calories than you are taking in. If we know how to calculate the calories we need we will know how to eat to achieve our ideal body weight. For example, if your ideal body weight is 120 pounds, and you are not doing any physical activity, then you would need to limit your daily calories to 1320. This then tells you how many calories you need each day to achieve that weight. If your calorie intake is generqally greater than that, you can cut back gradually. Calories can be our friends or our enemies depending on how we use them. The key is to limit their intake to the amount we need.
