Hair straightening using flat irons is done by pressing the hair strands between two heated metal plates like ceramic. Modern flat irons use tourmaline infused plates or a nano coating of silver which gives extra shine and prevents the growth of bacteria. High quality devices come with variable heat setting to suit the temperature needed for the hair type. Basically medium or low quality flat irons have just one heat setting.
There are some factors you need to consider while choosing. Straighteners are available with auto turn off facility, which turns the device off if not used for a certain time period.
- An ordinary flat iron can cause damage to your hair if it is wet. Make sure to blow dry hair completely before straightening. Or else you should use a wet/dry compatible straightener.
- A hair protectant can be used to prevent the hair from damages due to heat. A wide variety of products are available that helps to act as a barrier between your hair and the heat of the iron.
- Prefer ceramic straightening rods. They give uniform heat distribution and also glide smoothly through your hair avoiding snags.
- It is recommended that you don’t use flat iron frequently. During the course of time it can lead to damages. It makes your hair dry and brittle.
- The cords should not be wrapped around the plates as it may lead to short out sooner or later.
- Make sure you do not rest the heated flat iron over a section of the hair for a long time. The high temperature can damage it badly. Glide the iron smoothly through the hair and repeat the process if needed.
- Ironing small sections of hair at a time gives the best results. Always prefer the lowest heat setting that is most effective on your hair.
- Unruly, curly and thick hair can be straightened using high heat setting, while thin, fine and hairs that are damaged requires a low heat setting.
