Look Chic For Less: A Guide To Consignment Shopping

Want a Prada bag but don't want to spend a fortune? Maybe it's an Ed Hardy jacket, or a pair of strappy Manolo Blahnik summer sandals you crave? Or, even better, a little black dress for a July wedding that will impress without ruining your budget?

Lots of the best-dressed women you know are finding all this for a lot less than you'd think at consignment shops like The Designer Consigner.

The first clue that this blink-and-you'll-miss-it shop on Bardonia's Route 304 is worth the trip is owner Marcie Myerow, who is dressed like a rock star in a BCBG jacket, skinny jeans and knee-high black boots. A former school teacher, Myerow left the classroom behind as she started to raise a family. But she's always been a die-hard shopper just one who never liked paying full price for her wardrobe.

"I was always a big consignment fan," Myerow says, as a steady stream of customers come in searching for spring dresses and cropped jeans. "Like a lot of people, I'm a below-retail kind of shopper, and I liked the idea of running my own business."

Myerow has turned the space into a boutique with deep celadon and red paint on the walls, and floral chairs in the dressing room. wholesale handbags. The blond wood floors and neatly organized racks of clothes waiting to be browsed give this space an instantly upscale feel, too.

Everything in the shop is second-hand (that's how consignment works) but don't call it "used." Myerow prefers gently worn, "or pre-owned," she says. She sells upscale labels, from contemporary designers, that are in pristine condition meaning no rips, tears or stains and no more than one or two seasons old. "Since I am a consignment shopper myself, I know what I like and I have a standard that I want to maintain."

Even better? Everything sells for about 70 percent off the original retail price.
Myerow flips her inventory seasonally, and the newest finds are up front. Right away, you'll be drawn to the outfits she has pulled together: An Ed Hardy T-shirt under a light brown Tahari jacket is a great look for work; a pair of cropped white jeans paired with a summery pink tee and a linen jacket is perfect for brunch. wholesale fashion handbags.

Move toward the back of the store and you'll find out-of-season clothing, suits, and yes, special occasion dresses think prom, weddings, and black-tie dinners.

There are shoes of every description: heels, sandals, platforms, flats and even some boots from an array of recognizable names like Gucci, Prada and Joan & David. There are handbags galore, belts, scarves, and a small section up front dedicated to jewelry and sunglasses. On a recent visit, there was a great pair of gold Chanel earrings still in their original box.

"I really set out to make customers feel like they are in a boutique," says Myerow, before heading off to help a customer find the perfect jacket to pair with a lacy T-shirt she's pulled from the rack.wholesale purse
