Search engine optimization is all the rage these days, with every small company, it seems, offering their services to help you optimize your website. But do they really know what they are doing or are they just going to take your money and run off with it, leaving you with bad search engine rankings and nothing to show for your lost money? Should you focus on local search engine optimization or just some general search engine optimization?

Local search engine optimization is useful when you service a smaller area; say you have a physical store in a small city in Utah. You would not really want to advertise your website to the whole United States, but only to a small area in Utah so you can attract people to come into your brick and mortar store.

With local search engine optimization, that is the goal. You are targeting phrases that include your local geographic location. With this in mind, when someone searches for Alpine, Utah mortgage lender, your website and company name would appear in the top four or five listings, preferably the top one.

When looking for a company to do your local search engine optimization you need to be sure the company knows the difference between local optimization and general optimization. If they only understand how to do general optimization, it will not help you as much as an organization that can do local search engine optimization.

Check for their existing work. Have they worked with clients doing local optimization or just optimization in general? If not, are you willing to be their first client and learning experience? This may not be a bad thing really, it may just take a little more hand holding and attention than if they already knew what they were doing.

So what does a good local search engine optimization company do for you? Obviously they will get you better rankings for those local terms that include your general terms as well. Returning back to our small city in Utah, if you were doing small engine repair in Price, Utah, some of the terms the optimization company would work on for you would include small engine repair in Price, Utah, and Price Utah small engine repair.

They would include these phrases in your copy on your website, in the title tags for your website, and in any related articles which may link back to your site.
