Liverpool - A Cultural Center In The United Kingdom

Liverpool holds much importance as a cultural centre in the United Kingdom. It has been made famous by its music, performing arts, literature, museums and art galleries. In 2008, the city was bestowed with the title of European Capital of Culture for its contributions to European culture.

Many of the world's favorite musicians have emerged from this metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England. The Beatles, one of the most successful bands in the history of music were at the forefront of the Mersey beat movement. This was a movement that originated in Liverpool. The genre was a fusion of rock n roll, R&B, skiffle, doo-wop and soul. The Beatles broke into American pop culture with this sound and paved the way for other musicians from Liverpool to do the same.

Other great musicians of the time that originated from Liverpool were Billy J Kramer, Cilla Black, Gerry & the Pacemakers, The Searchers, Echo and the Bunnymen, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Frankie Vaughan and more recent groups like Atomic Kitten.

The city is also famous for housing the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. This is the oldest surviving symphony orchestra in the UK. The city also hosts many music festivals throughout the year. The Mathew Street Festival is an important music festival of Liverpool that attracts visitors from all over the world. A number of local as well as international bands perform at this festival.

There are also a number of music venues that host International music events. The MTV Europe music Awards was held in the Echo Theatre in Liverpool in 2008. Since then, the Echo theatre has hosted world renowned musical acts like Elton John, The Killers, Lady Gaga and many more.

Liverpool is also famous for hosting the annual Liverpool Shakespeare Festival. The festival is hosted every summer in the Liverpool cathedral and in the St James Gardens. The festival is an annual celebration of the works of William Shakespeare. Theatre groups from all over Europe participate in this festival.

The city also plays host to a number of other theatre festivals like the 'Every word Festival' and 'Physical Fest'. There are a number of theatres in the city. These include the Empire, Everyman, Liverpool Playhouse, Neptune, Royal Court and Unity theatres. These theatres regularly host performances by theatre groups from all over the United Kingdom.
