Live To Cook Or Cook To Live?

Food is integral to our lives. In Maslows hierarchy of human needs food and shelter are about as basic as it gets. Humans, however, have come a long way since the earliest days of our existence when simply securing enough food to suffice occupied most of our time, energy and resources.

So, food, its preparation and cooking is no longer simply about survival. We have time. Indeed the supermarket trip might feel like battling through a jungle. But in reality our energies can now be directed towards the preparing, serving and cooking of our meals rather than just procuring the basic necessities.

We have plenty of resources too for easing the whole preparation and cooking process. Some of our labour saving devices can at times seem anything but, but who can doubt the usefulness of a food mixer when it comes to creaming butter and sugar for a Victoria sponge or other cake?

Even with all of these advantages certainly cooking occupies at least some part of most day for many people, be it the mum feeding her hungry family after school or the elderly person living alone now the family has flown the nest.

For some, cooking is a pleasure, to be savoured almost as much as the eating. They enjoy the attention to detail, getting the flavours and textures just right. For others, it really is a chore, the relentless grind of feeding others day after day.

I suspect most of us fall somewhere between the two. And indeed many of us probably vary, the daily ritual of workday cooking with its routine may give way at weekends to a more leisurely time for trying out new recipes, new ingredients, new techniques.

Whichever kind of cook you are one of the ways you can of course enhance your culinary experience is with the right tools and equipment. As with any craft, cooking has its own required tools. You wouldnt expect to get very far in a garden without a spade and a fork and the same is equally true of cooking. Sharp, good quality knives, chopping boards, basins, saucepans are among some of the basic requirements.

And you never know, with the right tools you may just find yourself enjoying your cooking so much more that you really do start to live to cook!
