Little Oakley

Little Oakley is a small picturesque village nestled quietly between Corby and Kettering in Newton. Although it is a small and quaint unassuming little village, it is steeped in history with landmarks of interest such as St Peter's Church, dating as far back as the 13th Century and a small stone built cottage sitting opposite the Church which dates back to the 17th Century.

St Peter's Church is by far the main focal point of the village and has its own history. Some of the earliest parts of the Church date back to the 13th Century with the main tower being 15th Century. It is an imposing building and on the inside there are the remains of small fragments of a medieval wall painting, along with monuments relating to the Montagu family members dating as far back as the 16th and 17th Century. The Church has a chequered past, as during the reign of Elizabeth I, in 1552, 15 men armed with staves and swords broke into the church causing a fight resulting in one man's death and another being seriously injured. Reportedly the reason for the brawl was a dispute between the new Lord of the Manor William Montagu and the priest. During the early 1860's the Church underwent a restoration programme but today is largely unused except for some small services.

Primrose Cottage was home to many generations of the same family, all of whom are now buried in St Peter's Church which is opposite the cottage. Today you will find that Primrose Cottage is a bed and breakfast business set in beautifully landscaped gardens, offering dinners by the log fire in winter and al fresco dining in the summer.

Little Oakley is also home to its own Football Club. Little Oakley Football Club plays in the Essex and Suffolk Border League with fixtures also for ladies football in the Essex County Women's League and has both female and male junior sides competing in the Colchester and District Youth League, the Essex Girls League and the Suffolk Girls League. The club plays regular fixtures both home and away and operates a social calendar of events.

Although generally speaking it can be a costly affair to buy houses in Little Oakley, the average house prices during 2011 have remained fairly stable with an average house price of a four bedroomed house rising a little; however, the average price of a two bedroomed house remains pretty much the same. If you are considering buying a property in Little Oakley you will be pleased to know that the average council tax bill for Little Oakley is only slightly above the English average.

Little Oakley, although sleepy and quaint, has all the usual amenities that you would expect from a larger village or town. There are regular buses, trains, a post office and it is close by larger serviced towns such as Great Oakley and Corby. There are some truly beautiful walks that begin in Little Oakley and nearby Corby has plenty of fishing and horse riding activities as well as a swimming pool complex for those that enjoy swimming. All in all, Little Oakley has much to offer.
