Litter Of All Kinds Is Ugly And Potentially Unsafe

By:

Despite the trendy new wave of global responsibility the world is currently experiencing, papers, cigarette butts, beer bottles and aluminum cans continue to clog the shoulders of America's freeways and to find their way into our gutters and sewer systems. Litter is not only an eyesore, it can also be extremely harmful to the environment. Responsible citizens should work hard to avoid complacency about the thoughtless and inappropriate disposal of all kinds of household trash.

-- To prevent future littering habits, it is essential that parents set a proper example for their children about the proper disposal of garbage. When parents work hard to recycle their own household goods and take the time to pick up and carry out stray water bottles while on a mountain hike, their children will take notice. The future generation will learn at a young age that it's everyone's responsibility to dispose of trash the right way and, if needed, take care of others' garbage as well.

-- When putting out the trash, make sure that garbage can lids are securely fastened. Even the new large sanitation receptacles for the home cannot withstand high winds, so don't put them out on the street during stormy conditions when they are at greatest risk of being tipped over. Stray trash flying down the streets creates an eyesore; worse, hazardous liquids that accidentally find their way down the gutter and into the sewer system threatens our health along with our ecosystem.

-- One of the most insidious forms of littering is the improper disposal of cigarette butts. What kind of damage can one little cigarette butt make? Probably not much. But in large amounts, butts are a real safety hazard. Worldwide, butts make up 175 million pounds of trash on a yearly basis.

There are 60 known carcinogens contained in cigarette butts, and these carcinogens don't go away on their own after the butts are discarded. They are harmful to humans, the environment, and all kinds of animal life. If you smoke, or know someone who does, stop throwing butts out of the car window, and use the ashtray; all businesses have cigarette disposal receptacles outside: please use them.

-- Consider planting greenery and flowers along curbs and sidewalks. Keeping our neighborhoods beautiful discourages people from littering thoughtlessly, as they will want to keep their home areas looking great.

There are many more ways to keep our neighborhoods, states, country, and planet trash-free and healthy. But in the end, not littering comes back to a matter of individual responsibility: let's do a better job in our own lives and encourage others to as well.
