Non-specific back pain has no obvious cause, but is usually related to incidents such as muscle strains from overexertion or strenuous activity.

The symptoms are very similar to any other types of back discomfort, that can manifest in any region of the back and may extend down to the lower back and buttocks.

Nonspecific back discomfort is easily treated with non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, also called NSAIDs. They can be obtained over the counter at any pharmacy or supermarket. If muscle spasms occur, muscle relaxants can be used, which need a prescription from your health care professional.

What are the possible causes?

This is not an uncommon ailment. Millions of people world wide suffer from back discomfort of some form or another, for which there is no rhyme or reason. However, the most commonly known cause is muscle strain.

Other possible causes may include:

Pregnancy infection, inflamed nerve, obesity, herniated disc, overworked muscles.

A sudden increase in weight can cause nonspecific back pain. You may have gained weight and not be aware that it is the cause of the pain in your back.

Pregnant women often complain of back pain, due the the extra weight of the growing fetus. Likewise, the growing abdomen can change the center of gravity, which will produce back pain. Abdominal muscles have an added function of giving support to the back. If the support is missing or is non effective, back pain can ensue.

A herniated disc can compress nerve roots causing pain in the lower back that can radiate to the extremities, resulting in numbness and tingling.

Back pains should never go untreated. If you have had back pain for over two weeks, seeing your doctor should be your next step. Pain lasting more than two weeks is considered to be chronic and it is important to find out what is causing it.

Nonspecific back pain usually is of a short duration that can be alleviated with pain medication and rest.

Stretching and flexibility exercise are a good strategy for removing back pain. These can help strengthen your muscles and increase your range of movement.

How is it diagnosed?

To diagnose this problem, your health care profession can conduct certain tests, such as physical exam, x-rays, CT, and MRI to determine the cause. These tests can come out normal, however, revealing no specific cause. Nonspecific back discomfort usually goes away in a few days with treatment.

Back pain can easily be prevented by learning how to maintain good posture both at rest and when lifting or doing anything physical. You should also exercise to increase mobility and make sure that your weight gain does not place too much stress on your back.
