List Building Mistakes

By:

There are many list building mistakes that new and even experienced marketers make when they try to build and maintain a list. Because your list will be a direct line to your customers, it is essential that you use it correctly. This will allow you to increase your income while you provide value to your readers. Avoid these list building mistakes if you want to excel at your home business.

Mistake 1: Not Targeting Your Customers

Too many home business owners try to grow their list without thinking about who they want to sign up. A large list is great, but one with people who are eager to read your messages and follow your advice is even better. So take a moment to think about who you want signing up. As you do your list building, make sure you are targeting these people. Speak in a way that they will understand and tell them why they should sign up.

Mistake 2: Not Giving Them a Reason to Stay

A large list building mistake is not providing value. Whether you are selling a service, a product, or just your expertise, you need to give your readers a reason to stay with you. Don't think about you want from them. Focus on what you can provide. Your readers need to trust you before they'll want to do business with you.

Mistake 3: Being Inconsistent

Too many people who start a home based business are inconsistent. Now, this isn't saying that you have to keep doing the same thing forever. It's good to experiment and try different things to find what works best for you and your business. But there is a difference between testing a new approach and being inconsistent.

When people sign up for your lists, let them know how often you will be writing them. Will it be every day or once a month? Don't ignore your list for several weeks and them email them multiple times a day. List building isn't just about gaining subscribers. It is also about keeping them.

You should also be consistent with your message. Are you primarily informational with a little bit of sales thrown in? Or are all of your messages meant to persuade the reader to buy? Neither of these approaches is wrong, but if you promise someone an informative newsletter and give them sales messages, they will report you as a spam and unsubscribe from your list.

These list building mistakes can cost a home business entrepreneur time and money. Avoiding these three common problems can help you make money while giving your readers what they want. List building doesn't have to be difficult, but it can make the difference between home business success and failure.
