Link Building: Don't Underestimate The Power Of Internal Links

By:

Everybody who has a website or a blog wants more links, and in the link building process it is important that you do not forget to include your own internal links. A sound and smart internal linking structure is essential for effective website architecture, and it can also be good for helping a search engine properly categorize the contextual relevance of the different pages of your site.

A common feature in many of today's search engine algorithms is that the relevance of a given web page is sorted more powerfully by the anchor text in links pointing to the page instead of the on-page content and keywords. To say that another way, if you would want a certain page of your website to show up for a given search term, you would want to link to that page from other pages of your site with those words as the anchor text or clickable text.

Many people who own websites know that one of the popular ways that people earn revenue from websites is from Google text ads, but another part of their advertising program will let you put a Google search bar on your own website which lets visitors search through only the pages of your own site. So what if instead of searching the entire internet for a given keyword a visitor searched that term with only pages on your site? The page you selected and linked to with that keyword in the anchor text would show up first, and would allow your site to be easily searchable.

A good way to semantically sort the pages of your website so that they are easily searchable is to create a list of targeted links to specific pages in the footer of each page that you use as the template. When you do this, the more you expand your website then the more likely it becomes that those pages will show up when that specfic keyword is entered into a general Google search of the whole internet. Another common factor that many people overlook is that you can build the Pagerank of your own homepage by linking to it from other pages on your site.

The Pagerank score is logarithmic in nature, which means that a PR 4 page has ten times the linking power of a PR 3 page. Combine this factor with the fact that most other bloggers and writers will link to specific pages of your site and not the homepage, then your deep pages have an amount of Pagerank that can be transferred to your homepage with proficient text links to the homepage. This is a good idea because when ever somebody looks at the Google toolbar when they are on your site or when someone enters your domain name into a Pagrank checker, it is the PR 1-10 level of the homepage or the root directory of the domain name that is measured and counted.
