Line Marking - Car Parks

By:

Line marking of a car park is not as simple as putting down some white lines to fit as many cars as possible. There are guidelines that need to be followed.

In my experience as a line marker I have come across builders who will disregard any guidelines or commonsense in order to gain an extra car bay or two. I have seen some almost impossible car parks to navigate.Having said that, I must say this is only a minority group and that most reputable builders adhere to guidelines.

There are several points to consider when designing the layout of a car park. The 'Entry' and 'Exit' of vehicles needs to be assessed. Can it be done safely and what sort of signage or other aids such as concave mirrors, are needed.

A good car park should have directional arrows to allow for safe and easy traffic control. The Size of the arrows vary from car park to car park but I personally don't like to put down anything smaller than 1.4m long.

The number of disabled car bays and the width of these car bays needs to be carefully considered and also the placement within the car park layout. Its probably a good idea to check with local council as there might be a required minimum number of spaces.

Pedestrian walkways are often overlooked or left out of the equation, sometimes due to bad planning or lack of space, but where possible I advise pedestrian walkways and crossings are put in place.

Hazards should be highlighted, whether its a pedestrian hazard or vehicle hazard. This can be done with paint or other devices such as traffic bollards. The type of hazards that should be highlighted are anything that can create a trip hazard such as a traffic island or a drain.

Speed Limits should also be displayed. There are several ways of doing this. You could use signs or paint the limit on the ground. Keep in mind this does not apply to all car parks, you wouldn't want a speed limit displayed in a small car park where the limit is unreachable in the first place. Speed control devices such as speed humps and sometimes boom gates should be considered.

Not all of the above can be applied to all car parks especially smaller ones, they are just some points to consider in general. You can get carried away with markings and the car park ends up looking like an abstract painting becoming more confusing to navigate.
