Lice - A Problem To Be Dealt With

By:

Several years ago, a good friend of mine told me about a serious problem that had affected his family. He had several children; far more than most families do, and one of his daughters had just returned from a week at summer camp. She had a great time, made a lot of new friends, and came back with many exciting stories that would grow into memories that would help shape the rest of her life. She also came back with something completely undesirable, head lice. Her father was taking things in stride, but her mother seemed severely distressed. She swore us to secrecy with the admonition that any word of this to anyone under the sun could potentially destroy her daughter's life. I really did not get that; it was head lice, not leprosy, but I guess the social stigma that such an ailment could cause for a girl her age could seem like the end of her life. Being who I am, I encouraged her mother to shave her head. Her father smirked, but her mother almost broke into tears. The girl had long, flowing blond hair, and the thought of taking it down to skin was something that her mother could not bear. I asked them what they planned to do, and the father told me that they were trying to find the best solution.

My grandparents lived in Germany after World War II, and my mother and aunt went to school at one of the first schools produced by the United States Army for the dependents of military personnel. They actually had to use carbon paper when they did their homework, because military regulations required that it be submitted in triplicate. Aside from homework assignments, they also ended up getting lice. My mother said that all of the boys had their heads shaved and scalps scrubbed, while the little girls had to have their hair soaked in gasoline. Thank goodness no one was smoking during the treatment. That was over sixty years ago, and luckily there are better, safer, and more advanced treatments available. Many of these are far less embarrassing than being scalped and far less dangerous than dowsing hair and scalp in gasoline. It would behoove anyone afflicted with lice to do their due diligence in finding a suitable treatment that is permanent without being invasive. Lice is nothing to be embarrassed about, but it is a dangerous problem that should be addressed upon detection.
