The LG Optimus 2X was announced at January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and was the first dual core smartphone to be unveiled to the world. While many more dual core handsets have been announced since the Optimus 2X will be the first opportunity for most people to get their hands on the next generation of phone processing power. The Optimus 2X comes with a dual core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, effectively providing double the speed of the current crop of high end smartphones.

On release it will come with Android 2.2 Froyo installed, but this will be upgradable to 2.3 Gingerbread. The 4" TFT screen comes with capacitive technology which means that you can enjoy full multitouch controls, and the WVGA resolution and 16 million colour depth provides a high degree of visual prowess. Like a lot of touchscreen phones the Optimus 2X comes with an accelerometer allowing you to auto-rotate the interface, and is one of the first phones to feature a gyro sensor. This was made popular in the iPhone 4 and allows for full 3 dimensional controls which are put to good use with many apps and games.

There is a great deal of connectivity on offer with the Optimus 2X, including high speed 3G and Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi connection supports DLNA which means that the Optimus 2X can be hooked up to other DLNA enabled devices such as a home TV, allowing you to enjoy the 2X on a larger screen. This can be ideal for sharing videos with friends for example. The Optimus 2X also comes with microUSB and Bluetooth with A2DP for wireless headphones.

Interconnectivity with TVs is also provided via the HDMI port. Through this or the Wi-Fi connection you can stream videos contained on the Optimus 2X's 8GB storage (expandable with 32GB microSD cards) or even videos that you have captured on the 8 megapixel camera. As well as coming with an LED flash, autofocus and other great features the camera on the Optimus 2X really excels at video recording. As well as recording 720p videos the Optimus 2X is one of the first handsets that allows you to record full HD 1080p videos as well, and at a very good frame rate of 24fps.

Videos can also be streamed from online, either from YouTube which is supported out of the box, or any other video streaming website thanks to the inclusion of Adobe Flash 10.1. Many other Google services are available besides YouTube, including Gmail and Google Talk. The Optimus 2X provides a great deal of support for email and instant messaging alongside its threaded SMS and this places the Optimus 2X as an excellent messaging phone. This is further complimented by the fantastic social networking integration found on the phone, with Facebook and Twitter intricately woven into the interface.

The dual core processor found on the Optimus 2X was the feature that originally attracted a lot of attention to this phone but it has since come to light that this processing power will be available on many contemporary handsets. Despite this, there is a lot more to the Optimus 2X than its status as the first dual core phone and it particularly excels at messaging, social networking, entertainment and connectivity.
