Lexus Rx Versus Peugeot New Electric Hybrid

By:

Mention the words 'hybrid 4x4' and one word enters your head: 'compromise'. By trying to reconcile two conflicting aims, surely any company risks undermining the entire model. This explains why, when you mention the Lexus RX to any fan of 4x4 motoring, you'll receive a flurry of expletives.

The problem is not so much the car's performance as its very concept. The promotion says this provides high performance with fuel efficiency and a reduction in emissions. As such it feels like an attempt to offset the conscience of Chelsea Mum - those environmentally conscious mothers who hate themselves for taking their children to school in a gas guzzling SUV. Well, now they can rest easy because the Japanese car maker has produced a car that not only gets their little darlings to school safely, but also keeps the Polar bears safe and sound. What more could they want?

There is even a new Lexus RX out there: the 450H. It was first unveiled to the world back in 2008 at the LA Motorshow. The new model features an enhanced powertrain. It has a 3.5litre V6 petrol engine combined with a new and more efficient inverter. All tolled, the engine puts out an impressive 295 horsepower, 27 more than its predecessor. In theory the manufacturers say it should be able to mix it with its sports saloon.

However, if you think the Lexus RX is about to stroll away with the crown then think again. There is plenty of competition on its way, not least through a new 4x4 hybrid from Peugeot. This is a diesel electric hybrid - enough in itself to get any petrolhead's eyes spinning in rage. It will be out in 2011 and is already attracting excited murmur among those who are looking to see if an environmentally friendly SUV can really work.

We also have to consider the Ford Escape Hybrid 4x4. This was marketed as the first true no compromise hybrid. It has pretty good looks and does please those whose primary motivations revolve around efficiency. Those seeking for high performance may still feel a little let down.

The hunt for the first truly no-compromise SUV looks set to continue for the mean time. The Lexus RX is making all the right noises, but there's nothing new in that. Many others are aiming to do the same thing and customers can be forgiven for being a little jaded. The truth in the pudding will only come when one of them manages to put their money where their mouth is.
