Proud of its position as one of the foremost regional centres in the UK, the city of Manchester has, nevertheless, developed greatly, and its businesses have diversified in many different directions since the city was the cradle of the industrial revolution.

Lying at one end of the world's first inter-city railway the other end was in Liverpool, 32.75 miles to the west as the crow flies and at the hub of an extensive network of canals, both of these were instrumental in attracting industry to Manchester and the surroundings areas, and for a while, putting the city at the centre of the world's attention.

As those industries fell into decline in the latter half of the 20th century, however, new types of businesses were needed to replace them, and they came in the shape of the financial and business services sectors, which now account for a large proportion of Manchester's economic strength.

Manchester is known throughout the world as the birthplace of the co-operative movement even though that description is slightly inaccurate as it actually began in the nearby town of Rochdale in 1839. Today, the company which was born out of that innovation is one of the city's biggest employers, along with the likes of electrical equipment manufacturer Siemens, cereal-maker Kellogg's, and sportswear maker Adidas.

The term 'Manchester' applies to both a city and a metropolitan borough, the former being a settlement built on the confluence of the rivers Medlock and Irwell, and the latter to a much wider area, which also encompasses surrounding cities and towns such as Salford, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Wigan and Stockport.
The city has a proud scientific pedigree, and its universities, specifically the University of Manchester, are still major centres of research. The world's first programmable computer was developed by a team of scientists based here.

Manchester still has a diverse economy, with the scientific and industrial sectors, much reduced in importance from their heyday, now complemented by a growing retail presence, which has benefited from extensive redevelopment of the major shopping areas of the city.

Manchester lies at the centre of an excellent transport network, and is the only British city outside London to be completely encircled by a motorway, making road access to all parts of the city quick and easy.

Its airport, seven miles south of the city centre, is the largest in the UK outside London, and has a major cargo terminal which is served by flights from important worldwide cities such as Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York, Brussels and Frankfurt. So getting goods to Manchester from all corners of the globe is fast and efficient, and there is a dependable network of delivery companies able to reach all parts of the city.
