Visitors exploring the fascinating nation of Oman should make it a point to visit the beautiful environs of Wadi Sahtan. The luxuriant area is a truly attractive location to explore, and in years past was unsurprisingly called Omans treasure chest Mandoos Oman. The road to the site commences in the village known as al Ghashab. After a distance of about 10 km the road descends rather steeply towards Wadi Sahtan, and it immediately becomes clear why it was called Omans treasure chest; the surroundings appear to be overflowing with gems in the form of many different varieties of fruit. The area is renowned for its flourishing date palms and fruits, planted in the terraced fields and villages.
Several charming villages are to be found in the wadi, the latter being the name given to a desert valley. The village of al Khadra, considered to be the most beautiful in Wadi Sahtan, is well worth a visit, and the traveller will be able to see water spurting from a spring amongst the rocks. One of the most profuse springs in the area, this water source which has never run dry is diverted to irrigation channels to water the terraced fields. The visitor will also enjoy climbing up to the scenic hamlet of al Wajma, which is considered to be a typical Arabian desert village. Other picturesque hamlets in Wadi Sahtan include al Hajir, al Huwaijer, Amq and al Mazra.
