If a company has a bad reputation for including hidden fees to their new recruits in the initial contracts, they don't treat their representatives well, or they are simply a fraudulent company, word will quickly spread.

A simple search will bring up a listing of results where you'll find history and background on the company, and testimonials from people who have worked for them and purchased from them. If the testimonials are all good, it's a good sign. But still look to see how long they have been in business, where they are located, and what exactly is expected from their representatives.

Companies that make big promises such as high income your first weeks on flashy advertising, or packages that cost very little for signup, are usually not legitimate home based business opportunities. Legitimate ones usually have little to no cost just to get you to join.

In fact, many legitimate home businesses offer you incentives for joining such as free product or signup bonuses. And while some do require a small purchase from you at the start, this is usually only for a very small amount and you'll get something in return such as a product kit, or sample products.

The next step when looking for legitimate opportunities is to keep your mind open! While companies such as Mary Kay or Tupperware may be some of the first to come to mind when you think of home based businesses, these are in fact just two of the these that are out there. And they are both in the same field, direct sales.
