Learning To Unplug Will Create Balance

By:

Most people are reliant on modern conveniences and technology just as much as I am. Who can live without their cell phone or their laptop within grabbing distance for very long? Have you noticed how freaked out people get when they think that they have left their phone at home or when they realize that they don't have a signal? For many people, and these are not judgments, but they have to be constantly connected.

With every new technology and its social advances in our personal lives, comes the advancement of some bad associated traits. It is easy to be connected to anyone or everyone, anytime or all the time. Texting, while talking or emailing while tweeting has been referred to as a curse and a blessing for modern many alive during this time of history. Keeping up with your new world family and friends is just a few well placed digital characters away.

There are mounting man-hours and productive time wasted on simple status updates and checking cravings. Too much communication and connection is being accepted as normal daily functions. There is a lot to be said for the sanctity of silence. Without some disconnection time, the withdrawal will become increasingly painful. No one will ever be able to completely pull the plug because these things are part of our lives and will only increase as time continues to march on.

But taking a break from them can be good as well. Unplug for a weekend and see how you feel. Will you be more relaxed or will you be stressed out, dreading what is waiting for you when you reconnect? Unplugging and staying offline forever is probably not a realistic goal, and for the convenience and the help that being plugged in does offer, there is no reason not to take advantage of it. You can bank online, you can shop online, you can do research for that biology report due next week.

Online capabilities have created some pretty impressive ways to do old things the new way. It is not very realistic to think this technology is going to go away anytime soon and being plugged into is just a necessary part of using it. But this doesn't substitute time spent being separated from the connections to maintain a healthy balance physically, emotionally and mentally. No technology can ever create face to face time and contact as nature intended it to be; special and intensely personal.
