Learning To Play The Guitar

By:

For the beginner, learning to play guitar can be a frustrating experience. The position you need to put your fingers in to form those chords can look physically impossible. This is the biggest reason most people abandon their dreams of rock - or folk or country, whatever the musical taste may be - stardom before they even get started. It just looks too hard. I know this, because I've been there.

Stevie Ray Vaughn. Jimi Hendrix. Eric Clapton. Bob Dylan. Tom Petty. These men all started out where you are right now. Perhaps they weren't looking on the internet, but they were beginners - just like you. Keeping that in mind will get you a long way when learning to play the guitar.

Picking up a guitar for the first time can be intimidating. Aside from remembering that those legends of guitar started right where you are isn't enough to take away that apprehension. The best piece of advice I can give - and read carefully because this one is important - is this: don't expect to be able to play right away. Your guitar is going to make some horrible sounds before it starts sounding like you should. The plunks and squeals are normal. Don't let them deter you from continuing on.

Start with beginner lessons because that's what you are. You might be a natural but chances are, it's going to take a little time. Let yourself get used to how the guitar feels. Don't be surprised when your fingers are aching by the time you're done your first lesson. Calluses are badges of honor guitar players wear proudly.

Don't move on from beginner's lessons until you feel ready. Know the lessons and be able to run through them fluidly before you move on. That will make the next lesson that much easier.

Finally, let yourself progress naturally through your lessons. Don't rush yourself. If you start getting frustrated, but the guitar down and chill out for a little while. Frustration is the enemy. The only thing you will accomplish by letting that annoyance take over is ending your lessons and not learning how to play the guitar.

The most important part of learning to play the guitar is to remember why you wanted to learn in the first place. Remind yourself of that every time you think about giving up and most of all - have fun. That's what the guitar was made for!
