Learning self-defense is one thing that you might find important to protect you from bad elements in the society. Learning to defend yourself in any situation is indeed one good way to prevent yourself from being a victim of attack.

You might have seen these self-defense moves in popular movies and you may have seen how a smaller man take down a much bigger man or how a woman topple a man down with just one easy move. Indeed, learning self-defense does not always mean having big muscles to be able to defend yourself. Self-defense techniques involve more on using your smarts to be able to defend yourself from attack.

Most often, we think of learning self-defense by learning martial arts. Indeed, martial arts can help you a lot in knowing how to use some techniques that would help you outsmart your attacker. It has become an attractive technique in learning self-defense as it does help you develop skills that can help you defend yourself even from attackers bigger or stronger than you.

If you are interested in learning martial arts, there are actually lots of styles and types of martial arts that you can learn and although they may differ in their styles, they are useful in self-defense. Among the popular martial arts are karate, judo, taekwondo, aikido and many more. Most forms of self-defense use only your body to defend yourself although some forms may also use light materials such as sticks. Combined with the presence of mind as well as the smarts to protect yourself, martial arts can be of big help to defend yourself.

If you are a cop, a bouncer, or someone who is always exposed to danger, learning martial arts is indeed one wise move to win any fight in just minutes.

For women who want to learn a few self-defense techniques, martial arts is also a good option. Pepper spray or tear gas, which you can always bring with you, can also be of big help. Some items you carry daily can also be your tool in defending yourself. Car keys, key holders and even your high heels can be a good weapon, provided also that you know where to hit your attackers to give the biggest damage.

Truly, one thing about self-defense is learning where to hit your attackers. The groin area, the eyes and the neck are among the 'attack zones' to keep in mind. Learning self-defense is also about focus and presence of mind. If you panic, you will end up not knowing what to do and can even lead to making the situation worse.

Another important thing in learning self-defense is avoiding situations and places that will put you in higher risk of attack. Avoid walking alone in the dark or in dark alleys. Walk in groups and choose the well-lighted routes instead. Be alert always. Attackers most often prey for vulnerable victims. Have your cellphone always with you as possible and activate speed dialing.

Remaining calm in situations that pose great danger to you may be difficult to do but it is also one good way to think your way out of harm.
