What is High Angle Rescue?:
High angle rescue is a type of rope rescue that involves advanced rope systems in order to access and remove victims from steep, hazardous locations. Different types of rope rescue are required for various terrain conditions. High angle rescue refers to operations on terrain that is sloped at an angle of 60 degrees and higher. In addition to the use of rope, rescuers may need harnesses or litters to raise or lower the victim to safety.

High Angle Locations:
Hazardous locations that require high angle rescue should an accident occur include steep mountainous terrain, ledges, catwalks, cranes and water towers. High angle rescue may also be necessary in confined spaces, tunnels and sewer systems. Depending on the location, additional resources such as helicopters may be needed. No matter where the rescue is taking place, rescuers must assess the terrain and the victim's location carefully before implementing a rescue plan.

Necessary Equipment:
Rescue teams must be highly trained on how to use the appropriate equipment required for high angle rescue, as well as know how to identify which equipment must be used for different types of rescue. Depending on the location, angle and potential risk involved, different types of rope, harnesses and litters may be needed. Examples of high angle equipment include rope, pulleys, harnesses, litters, anchoring straps, rope pads, friction control devices and rope grab devices. Different materials, sizes and strengths of each piece of equipment must be taken into consideration, as well.

Other Considerations:
Besides equipment and rescue methods, other considerations must be taken when executing high angle rescue operations. The weather, for example, will have a significant effect on the rescue plan. If it is raining, snowing, extremely cold or very humid, your team must be prepared for any condition and must consider these effects on the victim, as well. The time of day is also relevant, as the available light can affect the operation. Be sure to keep the family and friends of the victim informed throughout the rescue, as this will be an overwhelming and emotional experience for them.
