Learn Which Countertops Are Helpful To The Planet

By:

Countertops are often the showpiece of many a kitchen or bathroom suite; exuding a sense of style and taste from the homeowner. More than this though, with modern advances it is now possible to use environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes to help minimize your impact on the planet.

For many people, ceramic tiles are used in both the kitchen and bathroom areas. However, for a similar look, recycled glass tiles could easily be used. The production impact of the process used, sintering, consumes a good deal less energy than creating something from a virgin material.

There are some downsides however notably their susceptibility to scratching which makes them problematic as a cutting surface for example. They are also not as smooth or uniform in shape, which again can be off-putting to many. However, in other ways, this can add to the whole design and finish, and lends a certain tangible quality to the final effect achieved.

Many companies are finding ways to reduce surface irregularity too so they are becoming increasingly viable as countertops in the kitchen. However, for bathroom use they are highly recommended by many conscientious designers and architects.

Paper composite is another excellent surface, particularly in the kitchen. Made from shredded paper and other materials with high fiber qualities, great designs can be bonded together with special resin.

As a kitchen work surface it is brilliant; being extremely tough and durable, and it resists exposure to heat fantastically well. It is also highly resistant to scratches and tears, whilst being naturally resistant to staining.

Though the lifespan is good already, even this can be enhanced through appropriate care. However, this is nothing more arduous than wiping down with a non-abrasive sponge and cleaner after each. Treating with natural oil will also help maintain stain resistance and increase moisture protection.

Another option is recycled plastic, and these come in a veritable kaleidoscope of colors and hues, including green! However, they can scratch easily, warp and buckle under heat, and burn on occasion. However, despite this, they still last well and are excellent for the bathroom.

An increasingly popular environmentally friendly material is terrazzo; comprised of crushed stone and glass, and set in an epoxy substrate or better still, concrete. This is hugely long lasting and has fantastic low maintenance qualities too.

Other environmentally friendly countertops can be made from certain woods, (particularly reclaimed), and cement. However, as with all the suggestions above, it is often more to do with the manufacturing process, which really makes them green; so checking sources here is important.
