Learn The Truth About Fibromyalgia Pain

By:

When I found myself constantly feeling exhausted and suffering from a deep ache all over my body, I started researching the possibilities for an underlying cause. I was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but my research did not stop there.

Now, in advertisements for an FDA-approved prescription treatment, we are being told that the pain is caused by sensitive nerves connected to the muscular system. So where's the problem? The problem is that professionals in the medical field are not in agreement about that issue! There are still many misconceptions and misinformation about this condition, so let me provide some clarification.

The biggest difficulty in obtaining my diagnosis came from facing skeptical doctors. There are numerous physicians who do not take the illness seriously or think it is merely the result of preexisting clinical depression. Some will go so far as to imply that as long as you recover from prolonged sadness, the pain and fatigue will vanish. Let me be so bold as to say THIS IS A LIE!

Our society leans heavily on the power of prescription drugs, but be warned that several of the medications in the industry today can trigger severe side effects that may interfere with everyday life even more than your fibro does. I experienced dizziness that was so pronounced, I was always afraid I was going to fall out of my chair during college courses. I would also fall asleep frequently when I was simply sitting still.

So before you go on any medication, make sure you fully understand all potential side effects, including worsening of preexisting depression, suicidal thoughts, vomiting, dizziness, and so on.

Alternate forms of pain management are the most advisable in my opinion. Massages, acupuncture, and chiropractic care have worked wonders for my condition. Deep-tissue massages are advisable because they tend to reduce high levels of inflammation commonly present in the body affected by fibro.
However, some people find these types of massages painful, so make sure to have a comprehensive consultation with your therapist before you begin. Developing a relationship with a singular skilled massage therapist can help you get the most benefit because over time, they will get to know your needs and your sensitivities. My massage therapist knows not to rub my thighs, as that is the most painful spot on my body.

Be aware that some forms of pain relief--such as acupuncture--can increase feelings of sleepiness in the short-term, so you should have a friend or family member drive you home after the treatment. Try to leave several hours open after your appointment so you can rest.

Do not rely too heavily on over-the-counter NSAIDs, as these can be very hard on your kidneys if you are taking many of them each day. Talk to your doctor to find out more information.
