Options trading is a way that you can make money on the market, whether it goes up or down. It does, however, take a little more knowledge and a little more involvement than simply putting your money in stocks.

By definition, an option is a contract between two parties who have agreed to buy or sell an asset at a determined price and at a determined date. However, it is not a contract that is set in stone. It is called an option because there is the possibility of not carrying out the transaction. This is usually the case when the asset value decreases and the buyer chooses not to go through with the purchase.

There are two types of options that you can invest in. There are call options and put options. A call option would be a contract for the buyer of the option to purchase a specific asset, whereas a put option is the contract for the buyer of the option to sell a specific asset.

Here is a very basic example of what an options trade might look like. John buys a call option from Harry. The contract of the option states that John will buy 100 IBM shares from Harry on June 7th for $20. At the time the contract is being made, the current share price is $30. If the share price of IBM goes above $20 on June 7th, then John will go through with the option. In order to make a profit, John can take those shares he just purchased at a discounted price and sell them on the open market for the higher, current market price. Now, if on June 7th the current market price was lower than $20, John probably would choose not to go through with the contract, and it would expire. The only thing John would have lost was what he initially paid for the call option.

As you can see, with the options to buy and sell specific assets, if you are wise you can make money on the stock market, no matter how it is doing. If you know a few options trading strategies, and you are carefully watching the market, as well as specific companies, you can make educated and wise decisions about what might happen to the market. That way, you can make a profit even on a falling stock market. Sounds great, right?
