Insomnia is a very common sleep disorder. A recent survey has revealed that an estimated 50 to 60 percent of the population is mildly affected by this disorder and about 15 percent of the population suffers from chronic insomnia.

What is insomnia?

According to specialists of the New York Sleep Centers, Insomnia is triggered by psychological or physical causes. Common among the psychological problems are stress, anxiety and depression. In fact, the direct outcome of depression is insomnia disorders. Those suffering from acute phases of mental illness tend to develop insomnia soon. Physiological causes springs from a variety of medical conditions. These include sleep-wake imbalance and rhythm disorders. Some of the most common medical conditions that lead to insomnia include chronic history of pain, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and crippling diseases like Alzheimers etc.

Doctors of the New York Sleep Centers have found that certain group of people is always at a higher risk of developing this disease. These include shift workers, seniors, frequent travelers, pregnant women, adolescent students, people at the throes of menopause, etc.

Insomnia can have a terrible impact on ones daily routine. It reduces decision making ability as well as attention by about 50 percent. It affects your communication skills and memory too. So, those suffering from insomnia need to undergo immediate medical treatment. Unless nipped in the bud, it may lead to irreversible complications in the human body.
