Scars are formed when the deep thick layer of skin is damaged. Every wound leaves behind some degree of scarring,bigger the wound severe the scarring would be. The formation of scars occurs due to excess production of collagen,prolonged inflammation and excessive proliferation of fibroblasts.

Scars are also known as cicatrices. Scar is the result of the natural process of wound healing on the skin surface. It can be said that the scarring is body's natural reaction to injury or wounds and it occurs after the wound is fully healed.

The scar tissue that replaces the original skin tissue is not identical but inferior in quality. This is so because unlike the original tissue,the scar tissue is not resistant to ultraviolet rays. Another drawback with scar tissue is that the hair follicles and sweat glands do not grow back within it.

The different types of scars are atrophic scars,hypertrophic scars and stretch marks. The atrophic scar occurs in the form of sunken recess on the skin surface and takes on the pitted appearance. The hypertrophic scars are due the over production of collagen that causes the scar to become a raised lump on the surface of he skin.

Atrophic scars are caused when underlying structures supporting the skin, such as fat or muscle, are lost. This type of scarring is associated with acne, chickenpox, other diseases, surgery and accidents. This form of scar takes the form of a sunken recess in the skin, which has a pitted appearance. Events such as pregnancy and excess weight gain cause stretch marks when the skin is subjected to stretching.

Scar treatment has become easy now thanks to modern scientific research. Almost all types of scars can be treated successfully and scar erasing is easier now. Scars disfigure the body by leaving seemingly permanent marks on the body making it ugly. Scars lower the quality of life of the suffering person by causing low self esteem and depression. These scars have a devastating effect on the sufferer and many especially teens contemplate suicide since appearance is important during the teen age.
