Learn About Depression And Its Treatments

What Causes Depression? According to studies, at least 20% of the population in developed countries suffers from anxiety and depression at some point in their lives. That means even if your family doesn't have a history of panic disorder, you can still suffer from depression. Despite the advances in technology and the number of researches about this disorder, no one can really say what causes depression. There are only triggers such as the following:

Major life events that causes stress such as death, childbirth, weddings, etc, Serious illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, etc, Taking of steroids and narcotics for pain relief, Intake of alcohol and illegal drugs

At the moment, no real tests have been developed to diagnose whether a person suffers from depression or not. Some physicians can request for physical condition and mental status exams but most depression treatment is still based on a patient's reported self-experiences.

Symptoms of Depression: The general term "depression" is used to describe a disorder, which is characterized by low mood accompanied, by low self-esteem and loss of interest in normally enjoyable activities. It is important that you recognize these symptoms early because your depression doesn't only affect the quality of your life - it also affects everyone else around you. If you care about your family and friends, then it is best that you get help in overcoming depression.

If you are experiencing some of the symptoms enumerated above for at least 2 weeks, then it is time for you to get help. Remember, chronic depression not only affects the quality of your life, but also everyone else around you. It is not a disorder that goes away by itself; you need treatment in order to get away from it.

Getting a therapist instead. If you are seriously bent on overcoming depression, then you had best recognize the fact that you need help. It is important that you get an effective therapist who can help you in processing your thoughts and emotions.

Your therapist doesn't need a PhD; he/she doesn't even need to be licensed. Even your family and friends can become your therapist, what's important is that you find someone whom you can connect with - someone you can trust to help you. You need someone who will not pressure you into telling your story or in taking steps to resolve your issue. Get someone who can empower you and back your decisions - someone who will wait for you to be ready to deal with your problem and support you.
