LDS missionaries prepare for their missions in many ways from the time they are young boys and girls. They attend church meetings, seminary, institute, pray, read the scriptures and regularly share their testimonies with others to prepare for the spiritual demands of a mission. They even scrimp and save working odd jobs during their teenage years in order to pay for the temporal needs of their mission. But what do they do to prepare for the physical needs of their mission?

Most current and prospective LDS missionaries neglect this simple thing when preparing for their missions. They forget to account for their physical fitness needs. A two-year mission is a long and grueling experience that takes its toll on the physical body and the physical health of a missionary if he is not prepared for the challenge that awaits him. The unique living conditions and exhaustive schedule on a day-to-day basis can take a toll on the physical health and wellness of even the most fit missionary, let alone a missionary who is not quite as fit.

What can you do to make sure you do not neglect the physical component of preparing for your mission and ensure that you are ready to meet the demands of missionary service? Luckily there are several things you can begin doing. For starters, you should begin an exercise program early on in the preparation process. Preferably, at least two years before your expected mission departure date you should begin to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, four to six days a week performing both resistance exercise as well as cardio exercise. One way of doing this is to perform a total body resistance workout on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and a cardio workout on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday while completely resting on Sunday to allow the body some complete recovery time. Alternating your workouts in this manner will allow the body sufficient rest from one type of training (resistance) to the other (cardio) in order that the body is ready to go for the next workout.

If you have established this one habit of exercising regularly before leaving on your LDS mission, you will be physically prepared for almost any challenge that may come your way. You will have more energy and stamina, which will help you be more affective at reaching your full potential and maximizing your calling as a full-time missionary.
