Lighting is an often overlooked aspect of kitchen remodeling, but it has a huge impact on the look and feel of your kitchen. Layered kitchen lighting is one of todays hot new kitchen remodeling trends. Here are some lighting function and design considerations.

Layering: Todays kitchen renovation and interior design experts agree that you want to layer your lights, which means using different kinds of lights at different locations and levels in the kitchen. Determine how you use different areas of the kitchen. What kind of lighting do you need at the table or above the sink? How do you use the kitchen island or the areas under the cabinets? Answering these questions will help you decide where to install each kind of light.

Natural Light: During a kitchen renovation you want to maximize the rooms natural light. Not only is natural light good for your budget since its free, but studies found that people feel better and are more productive when exposed to more natural light. See if you can add or enlarge a window or install a skylight.

Ambiance: Think about the mood you want to create in your kitchen. If you want a dramatic look, contrast bright lights in one area with softer lighting in another. For a more contemporary style, consider brighter lights throughout. A country kitchen might call for lights that highlight specific elements of the dcor. Make sure that the style of your lighting fixtures coordinates with the kitchens design scheme.

Direct or Task Lighting: This is the lighting you need over the sink, counters, or kitchen island where you do most of your work. It provides the brightest illumination so you can see what youre doing. Task lighting can take the form of recessed or pendant lights suspended from the ceiling over the work area. You can put strip lights under the cabinets so theyll shine down on the counters.

Indirect or Ambient Lighting: This is a more diffuse light that creates a softer, overall glow in the room. You create ambient light with an overhead fixture or by lights on the tops of cabinets that reflect off the ceiling.
