Later Overeating

Later Overeating

With New Years resolutions starting to lose steam new research published from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston is shedding light n the best way to get back on track after overeating. Experts say that one bad meal, or even a string of several will not completely ruin a month of hard work, but that the slippery slope of longer term bad habits needs to be stopped.

Research shows, according to Dr. Rebecca Reeves, that nobody is perfect in their eating habits, but those that are successful at losing weight and keeping it off have unique ways compared to those that are not successful at dealing with overeating. According to the new research, those that succeed do not give up, they do not beat themselves up over the mistake. Instead they simply get back on track the following day, or meal.

This, according to the Baylor research group, was surprising. Most researchers until this work thought that people were most successful when they took overeating as a serious sign and redoubled their efforts. But according to the data, the more moderate approach of simply picking up where they had gone off track was the most successful long-term solution to overeating.

The biggest mistakes, according to Dr. Reeves, were weighing oneself immediately after overeating. This, they hypothesize is a problem because often a person can weigh much more due to extra water weight from the high carbohydrate and high salt foods that are typically eaten during a binge. While more research needs to be done on the topic, says Reeves, we believe that many people that weigh themselves right after a binge may lose momentum in their weight loss efforts due to the temporary increase in weight.

The best habit, according to the study was to stick with a normal exercise routine and standard breakfast. Those that were able to do morning exercise sessions and then have a standard breakfast were more likely to continue with their weight loss programs in a sustainable and successful manner according to the research.
