There's a new game in town when it comes to how websites can gain search engine attention. The old ways of keyword stuffing, using single phrases to optimize and concentrating heavily on incoming links are fading away as a newer, more holistic system for judging content comes into its own. This system is Latent Semantic Indexing and it has webmasters scrambling to keep up.

Latent semantic indexing, is a Google driven creation that's meant to better gauge the content of a web page in relation to the entire site to discover the overall theme. Latent semantic indexing is a more sophisticated measure of what sites and their pages are all about. While it doesn't mean webmasters need to completely retool all of their keyword optimization efforts, it does mean depth needs to be a greater consideration.

The history of latent semantic indexing is a continuation of Google's mission to make its search engine produce relevant, high-quality results. The initial ranking system relied heavily on incoming links and keywords alone to scan pages for their relevancy in regard to searches. Unfortunately, this system had a propensity to penalize some very good and relevant sites. It would overlook sites that were too new or added content too quickly. Although there are plenty of new sites that aren't necessarily loaded with good content, some are.

Google wanted a better way, and it was found. Latent semantic indexing is meant to scan the overall theme of a site so as not to penalize those sites that have fresh, relevant and good content even if they do happen to pop up over night.

Now, in order to gain ranking, sites need to have fresh, relevant content that takes keywords into account. The system is designed to help give searchers pages that better reflect what it is they are looking for, rather than those that have a ton of incoming links. Overall, the system is a more fair measure of what's available on the Internet. It fits better with Google's mission of giving results that are high quality and relevant.

The days of Google placing a bigger emphasis on incoming links or votes to rank sites for searches are coming to a close. Although incoming links will still be important, particularly if two sites tie on a search, these links don't carry the same weight. This simply makes it easier for webmasters who do their jobs well to gain opportunity for ranking.

What all of this means to web publishers is that those who have done and continue to do their jobs correctly will have a better chance of shining with latent semantic indexing. Those who keyword stuff, create nonsensical content and spend a lot of time using link farms likely will not.

The trick to getting ahead now falls on what good webmasters have long done. It's really nothing more than creating good content. Sites that do so should rank better for their relevant keywords. Those that don't, won't.
