Lasik Eye Surgery Addressing Eye Care For Refractive Errors

By:

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Any sort of surgery requires a serious thought and research before making a decision. This is especially true in a case where a patient is choosing to electively undergo LASIK eye surgery.

Contemplating surgery on an otherwise healthy eye means that you should always consider the safer options of non-surgical alternatives such as glasses or contact lenses. You should discuss options thoroughly with your eye doctor to learn as much as you can about the procedure. Setting up an appointment with a surgeon who performs LASIK eye surgeries is a good idea.

You should ask your surgeon about the technology that will be used during your procedure. You should be comfortable with your surgeon and the technology that will be used on your eyes during the surgery. You should of course research the different types of lasers or blades that could potentially be used on your eyes. For instance, while using an excimer laser helps make inadvertent eye movement less of a problem, custom or wavefront guided LASIK reduces the chance of nighttime visual problems.

After setting up an appointment with a surgeon in your area and educating yourself more on the procedure you should also be aware of your surgeons level of experience. After considering your surgeons background you may choose to begin the search for a different LASIK surgeon.

As with all surgeries there are possible complications. Less serious complications can include halos, haze, and glare. These complications usually clear up on their as the eye heals. More serious complications are eye infections, chronic dry eye, and LASIK flap problems. The Eye Surgery Education Council (ESEC) says that most of the complications can be treated and usually clear up within several months. It should also be known that less than 1 percent of people who have had LASIK so far have experienced serious, vision-threatening problems. Studies show that the more experience a surgeon has the fewer LASIK complications that doctor is typical to have in his patients. Any and all questions should be answered by your eye doctor or LASIK surgeon.
