When lasers were first invented in the 1950s, the American public viewed them as more science fiction than real life. Lasers were portrayed in movies as light beams that could zip through brick walls or car windows and zap enemies on the other side. Even up until the eighties when they were being used in the medical field and in some everyday applications, lasers seemed to be a thing of fantasy. Think of the light sabers in Star Wars. Now lasers are used very frequently in the medical world, in research labs, and in everyday life. They are not as exciting as Luke Skywalker would have us believe. Instead of facilitating rebel revolts in galaxies far, far away, they provide us with a way to listen to our James Taylor cd's.

Still, the future is here as far as laser technology is concerned. Surgeons regularly use lasers instead of scalpels in the operating room, and industry utilizes lasers as welding and cutting tools. Although laser usage has not come with the flash and bang that Hollywood had us expecting, there is some reason for alarm. Proper safety precautions must be taken when working with lasers. As simple as it sounds, a pair of laser safety goggles can make a big difference when it comes to protecting people from the dangers of lasers.

Wearing laser safety goggles is one of those things that because it seems so simple, it is actually too simple. Many people honestly forget to wear their pair of these useful devices because they get so used to working around lasers that they forget how powerful and dangerous laser light can be. Other times, people "forget" to wear them. Usually this is because they can be extremely uncomfortable and rather unattractive. Luckily, they have been revolutionized and people no longer have to sacrifice comfort or reputation in order to keep themselves safe.

At first, all this eyewear was made out of lead-infused glass. The glass had to be quite thick in order to include the necessary levels of lead, and then of course the lenses had to be thick enough and sturdy enough to accommodate such cumbersome lenses. The end product was nothing that anyone wanted to wear on their face for long. Now, lead can be infused into glass much more efficiently, eliminating the need for heavy and thick lenses. As a result, laser safety goggles are now much more lightweight and comfortable.

Because these goggles are much easier to manufacture, there is room to play around with design. While some people might place safety concerns above everything else, other people do not want to have to sacrifice personal appearance in order to be safe in the workplace. For people who like to look their best at all times, laser safety goggles now come in a variety of styles and designs, satisfying the demand for fashion and safety at the same time.
