Laser Liposuction Versus Traditional Liposuction

Laser Liposuction Versus Traditional Liposuction

By:

Lipolysis, the procedure of removing fat cells from the body, has met with a higher form of technology. Laser liposuction uses a laser to perform liposuction that reduces risk and infection. Recovery time is less than with traditional liposuction. Patients have little or no scarring, no bruising and smooth skin when treated with Laser Liposuction. Though the procedure is easy, it is still surgery and as with any surgery should not be taken lightly. Always research your physician and the procedure before undergoing surgery of any kind. Breakthroughs in medicine are taking more and more risk out of procedures to ensure safety and keep people healthy.

With traditional liposuction or other fat reduction methods, skin can often appear loose or saggy with less fat under it. The laser heats the skin and causes the skin to tighten to fit the new layer of necessary fat and muscle underneath. Laser liposuction is performed under local anesthesia with an awake and alert patient. The patient is free to communicate with the doctor and is less fearful of the procedure. Traditional liposuction requires general anesthesia which can cause complications and a lot more down time than laser liposuction, where a patient goes home the same day, typically three hours later, and is generally back to normal activities in a day or two. There is also less blood loss than with traditional lipo as well as less post operative pain, therefore over the counter medication is sufficient as opposed to the need for prescription strength narcotic pain relievers with traditional lipo.

The procedure used in laser liposuction involves a small cannula that is about as thin and long of a cooked piece of spaghetti. The cannula is gently inserted through a tiny incision, barely noticeable in a couple of weeks. Only one or two incision points per area on typically required. The laser then melts the fat and the liquidized fat is suctioned out through the cannula, leaving smooth undimpled and cellulite free skin. The traditional liposuction, in contrast to laser liposuction, a metal rod is used which is pushed and pulled across the fatty areas through a large incision. The rod breaks up fatty tissue and suctioned out through the rod in solid form. The large blocks of solid fat that is removed can leave loose skin over it causing dimpling and the appearance of cellulite. Usually further surgery is required to remove the excess and hanging fat which causes more visible scars.
