Las Tablas Panama: Undiscovered Gem

When you want a holiday full of sand and surf but short on fellow travelers and your budget is slim, try Panama. The little town of Las Tablas on the Azuero Peninsula rests in the centre of an agrarian area. Here Spanish culture is evident in the architecture and names, including places like Playa Uverito, a local beach. The people are known for their warmth and the coffee is marvelous.

Enjoy a laid back, old-fashioned feel. This is the centre of agrarian business. Though locals still often get around on foot or horse back, wearing traditional clothing you can buy from artisans, all that one could need is here. The beach is close for relaxing days in the sun.

Nearby towns such as Chitre are slightly more urban. Here you will find horses and cars together. Chitre provides car rentals, though another cheap way to travel is by taxi. Pedasi is beautiful and accessible by air. Join a fishing tour among other attractions.

Sea sports are critical to the tourist economy and a huge draw for visitors. Try your hand at wind surfing in the sea. Isla Cana is well known to naturalists for its turtles: come and see them hatch. A boat trip to Isla Iguana is worthwhile for divers and bird watchers.

Carnavals are big cultural events here. Make sure you do not try to book a room during carnival time in Las Tablas. Choose to stay there, experience a carnival in another town (there are lots), or stay elsewhere and visit the one in Las Tablas. Rooms fill up quickly at this time and become more expensive. Cultural attractions also include Museo Herrera for pre-Colombian artifacts plus local cathedrals built in the Spanish style. Take the drive out to the Panama Canal too, knowing you can always return to your rural paradise to sleep and reflect. You might want to rent a car at Chitre or the airport. Another, inexpensive alternative is to travel by taxi.

Panama City is a few hours away by car, but visitors do not need a huge city centre to find life. Las Tablas features all of the amenities visitors of every age could need. There are supermarkets, gaming, bars and discos, plus places to plug in your computer for internet connection charged at an hourly rate. Considered a safe country, hospitals are close. This should reassure even the most worried parent.

Keep the heat in mind. Finding a hotel with fans and air conditioning can be very important to your overall comfort. Pasada Del Mar, a beachfront bed and breakfast just ten miles from town. Only five rooms are established here so expect a peaceful break. Hotel La Luna is also on the beach. Their clean rooms have air conditioning, TV and the hotel provides a pool and internet. Friendly staff will give tour advice where needed. They also serve breakfast.

City hotels are another option. They situate visitors close to all modern conveniences, including shops with internet access charged per hour. Night life with music and gaming is also available. Do your souvenir shopping, eat local food or check out a place that serves a familiar and comforting dish: pizza.
