Largest U.s. Retailers

By:

In a country of generally very large retailers, a few stand out at the top of the heap. Working for one of America's largest retailers has several benefits, including more numerous advancement opportunities and the ability to transfer your job to a new location if you move away.

Wal-Mart

By now, everyone is familiar with this behemoth's dominance of the American retail sector. There's a Wal-Mart store in practically every town around the country, and the company has recently announced plans to expand its stores into urban areas with a "smaller footprint" that fits into traditional urban storefronts. The sky is the limit with Wal-Mart; they offer generous benefits and those who work here get priority on promotions and advancement opportunities.

Home Depot

In the world of home improvement, Home Depot is like the Wal-Mart of do-it-yourself home renovators. The company has been expanding rapidly for years and job openings seem to occur at a breakneck pace. It should also be noted that Home Depot is widely credited with being a good place to work -- not only for management, but hourly employees as well. That's hard to find, so openings for retail jobs at this employer close quickly.

Costco

The leader in its "buy bulk" market niche, Costco has stores in every state and has a good reputation among its current and former employees. Though Costco is not a commission-based retailer, they do offer great benefits packages and haven't been subject to the seemingly unending string of public relations nightmares that their competitor, Wal-Mart, has fielded in recent years.

Best Buy

Electronics geeks, do not despair! Best Buy is one of the largest retail companies in the United States and its recent expansion into selling Apple products from laptops to iPads makes it well-positioned for future success. Many of Best Buy's departments operate on a commission-based structure and offer unlimited earning potential for successful salespeople, making this nationwide retailer a hit among the technologically-elite.

Macy's

For the high-end salesperson or manager, Macy's is the largest nationwide department chain with stores in every U.S. state and a pace of expansion that outdoes its rivals by at least a mile. Macy's puts extra care and detail into each of its stores, customizing the design and even the brands it carries based on the local clientele's shopping habits and preferences. That makes it a great match for people who know their community, and their fashion, equally well. With many commission-based positions, Macy's is a great place for high-paying retail jobs.
