Garden rooms hard back to biblical times and the exotic hanging gardens of Babylon. Through the ages, garden rooms donned a formal look that eventually graced the sumptuous homes of European aristocracy. But these rooms served to please the eyes more than the soul.

Todays garden rooms create places we desire to be, not just places to see. They form nooks and niches in the garden where we curl our toes in the grass, sip our morning coffee with the newspaper in hand, and play board games with our children. They remind us of favorite vacation destinations, soothe us with their sense of sanctuary, and extend our indoor living spaces. Garden rooms are all about expanding our comfort zone. They help us relax after a busy day, provide a place for friends and family to gather, and charm us with the promise of reconnecting with nature.

Questions you need to answer to know what you want your outdoor room to be:

Do you want to dine outdoors
Do you want a secluded spot for relaxing
Do you want a private spa area
Do you want a place to meditate
Do you want a play area for your children

Answering these questions will help you, and your landscape designer, if you are working with one, to create the outdoor room that fits your needs.

Now, you need a way to get to the new room. One of my favorite ways is a winding path when the path reaches the new room, the surface underfoot changes giving a clear message that you are now entering a new space.

You can create an outdoor room in your garden by adding boundaries such as a fence, shrubs or even a wall. As for the ceiling, a simple umbrella works wonders providing shade as well as a cozy feeling.

What else goes in a room? Certainly lighting, music and color. Use weather-proof fabrics, low voltage lighting and outdoor speakers. If your new room is for dining, paint the table and chairs your favorite color. Of course you can use plants to bring in color.
