Lactation Consultant - Breast Feeding Specialists To Help Mothers Breast Feed

By:

A lactation consultant is a relatively new type of professional who's main focus is teach young mothers how to correctly breast feed.

That may seem like a simple task, but it's not. Some mothers and some babies have problems breast-feeding and the lactation consultant works with them to figure out the problem and find the solution in order to breast feed sucessfully.

The first question mothers have when thinking about lactation consultants is: "where do I find one?" Lactation consultants are located in many areas. Your local hospital may have one or more on staff. Clinics and doctor's offices also employ lactation consultants.

Many of these consultants also have a practice of their own. There are a number of different ways you can find one close by. Ask your local physician or talk to some other mothers or even a midwife in the area.

There is always the yellow pages or an online directory. you can also get in touch with the International Lactation Consultant Association and see if they can point you in the right direction.

And, if that isn't enough to help you find a consultant for you, Medela, a large manufacturer of breast pumps and baby products, also has a service to help you hook up with a lactation consultant.

Once you find a consultant, feel free to talk to him or her about any issues you are worried about. If you have given birth and are having trouble perfecting the technique, they can help coach you. They can show you how to hold your child correctly and get them to suckle.

A lactation consultant can also help with other problems. If you have breast pain caused by engorgement or other nursing problems, the consultant can help relieve these problems.

They know how to improve your baby's feeding, which helps them gain weight as they grow; if your baby has weight problems, they are definitely who you want to talk to (though you should talk to your doctor, as well).

If you have low milk production or too much milk production, they can show you methods of improving your situation. They also know about products, like breast pumps and nursing bras, that you can use while your baby is an infant.

So if you are experiencing problems with your breast feeding it may be wortwhile considering employing the services of a lactation consultant.
