Located 391 Km southeast of Colombo the Kumana National Park is one of Sri Lankas must see attractions for nature tourists. A popular eco tourist magnet and bird sanctuary, Kumana is adjacent to the Yala National Park and was formerly known as the Yala East National Park.
Kumana is Sri Lankas best destination to observe large numbers of migratory birds and aquatic birds including flamingos, herons and ibis is a must see' for bird watching enthusiasts.
Approximately 20 lagoons and tanks support the extensive bird life of the national park and The Kumbukkan Oya forms the parks southern boundary of the park. One of the most distinct features of this park is the 'Kumana Villu' - a natural mangrove swamp lake spread across 200 hectares nourished by the mentioned Kumbuk Oya. A large number of water birds come to nest here during the months of June and May and regular sightings of painted storks, pelicans, white ibis, spoonbills, egrets, herons, and sometimes little cormorants can be experienced here. It is also said that the rare bird black-necked stork has occasionally been seen at the swamp.
In addition to the amazing birdlife, the park is also home to leopards and elephants. In addition to the open marsh area the plant life in Kumana mainly includes the karan fern, mangrove trees and kumbuk trees.
A Birding and safari camp is located near the riverbank of the Kumbukkan River. The campsite is accessible only by a 4 wheel drive vehicle. This site offers camping in style with the site set up prior to your arrival, with everything from a kitchen sink, chairs and tables, toilets, showers and cold beer being transported in.
