Kulula Flights

By:

"Thank you for flying Kulula. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride." Dont worry, they are just kidding! Kulula.com is an airline that can be described as humorous and light-hearted. They are one of three low cost domestic carriers operating in South Africa, along with Mango and 1Time. The Kulula brand is owned by Comair, the same company that operates British Airways flights in Southern Africa. Their shocking green aircraft and uniquely designed graphics set Kulula apart from the competition in this industry, especially when their most famous aircraft is the Flying 101 plane, where the design explains all the different parts of the plane, on the outside.

The airlines target market is described as Anyone who buys a ticket. This would include the young, the elderly as well as businessmen and women. This has impacted their marketing strategy in such a way that they could continue their no-frills approach not focusing on any specific segment.
Kulula offers food and drinks in-flight through a buy on board programme just like Mango and 1time. In addition to their low cost flights, Kulula has expanded their services to include prepaid airtime and credit cards. These services now include further options of car rental and booking rooms at any Protea Hotel through their website. You can also request an Imperial chauffeur driver to give you a ride to the airport for R150. On top of these services, passengers have the opportunity to book an adventure or activity like shark cage diving or a visit to a health spa, when they buy a ticket.

The airline has teamed up with ebucks so that their members can purchase tickets with their loyalty points via the internet. Kulula.com is the only low cost carrier with a frequent flyer programme, rewarding frequent flyers - the programme is called Jetsetters and members accumulate points which are converted to kulula moohla, which can then be used to pay for further air tickets or car hire.

In short, Kulula aims to be easy going, and they definitely are - from the humour of the pilots and hostesses, to the graphics which appear on their aircraft and all their marketing efforts - their new marketing campaign says it all you gotta love flying.

Kulula Airlines Quick Fact

The name Kulula is Zulu for it is light or it is simple. Their humour is not for everyone, but it definitely makes for a more interesting flight and catches your attention during emergency procedure announcements. The airline was established in July 2001 and first flights took off in August 2001.

Kulula Airlines Routes

Kulula.com operates on all the major domestic routes from Johannesburg. They also offer the possibility of booking international routes via alternative airlines, specifically those operated by Comair. Currently the airline has a fleet of ten Boeing 787s with eight more on order.
