Korea, the East Asian country, currently divided into two states namely, North Korea and South Korea. It has a rich legacy in culture and arts and has been referred to in the ancient Chinese literary works as the Rivers-and-Mountains-Embroidered-on-Silk. Most of the Korean celebrations are associated with vivacious and lively colors which seem to have been due to the Mongolian sway the country had long back.
The conventional Korean clothing has its ancestry dating way back to 57BC 668AD which has been reveled through the paintings which has been fund on the walls of the tombs (belonging to the same period). The traditional Korean dress is the hanbok. The upper part is called the jepgiri which is basically the chemise having extended sleeves, and the mens type are a bit longer that the ladies, as it stretched almost till the waist. The skirts which are worn by the women are known as the chima whereas the men have pants which are baggy in nature called the paji. Normally men wear white pajis except during occasions and festivities. The movers and shakers of the society normally prefer wearing vibrant colors reflecting their status quo. Accessories of various types are worn like foot-gear, jewelries, head-dresses, hair-pins, etc.
The materials which are used for making the Korean clothes as well as accessories are prepared from various types of materials. You tend to find several kinds of fabrics across different regions in Korea. Few of the regions which have distinct fabrics diverse from each other are Hansan, South-Chungchong-Province, etc. The fabrics which have been used in the Korean clothing mirrors its culture and society traditions.
The diverse weather condition which prevails over Korea has forced the individuals to resort to various types of Korean clothes round the year, ranging from hemp, ramie, cotton-muslin, satins and silks. When the weather is cool, the Koreans tend to wear heavier fabrics having fur lining, whereas during the summers, they wear lighter ad thinner clothes. It has been commonly seen that during autumns, the women wear clothes which are made of gossamer-silk causing a crinkling sound while they walk.
Most of the Korean clothing worn by the common man has lighter shades, whereas the individuals belonging to the upper strata wear brighter shades echoing their class and status quo in the society. Korean clothes have great embroideries and sewing skills exhibited. In ancient times, the women used to spend most of their time sewing and making wonderful embroideries on clothes for their family. Norigae is one particular type of Korean- macram which was seen as a widespread hobby among all the unwedded ladies and wives for years together.
Unlike the adults, children where normally dressed in bright vibrant colors. Kids are often gifted with dresses which are bright along with patterned socks on their 1st birthdays. This tradition is still followed in Korea.
Officially the same pattern in followed where the rich and the influential wear brighter shades and the other commoners wear lighter or white shades. On special occasions like marriage, etc., vibrant colors are worn by the commoners as well.
