The goal of this publication is to help you understand all of the requirements in renewal process and knowing about the C.P.E. Continuing Professional Education section to renew your license as a CPA.

This publication will not get into each area of the CPE , keep in mind as you research your local state CPE requirements, below is items youll need to be aware of.


How often do I need to renew and what is the amount of credits needed?

Most of the time, states require 20 hours of CPE credit annually with a minimum of 120 hours over a three year term. Dividing the hours required brings it to 40 hours of CPE credit annually. In addition, several states have separate prerequisites with regards to ethics CPE courses which must be completed once every two or three years.

The completion times for CPE vary by state with a number of states using the last day of each month of the CPA's anniversary date. Some states use a single date for all CPAs. June 30th seems to be the dominant date for renewal.


Who Are the CPE Approved providers?

Slightly more than 50% of states show little formal registration or clear approval process in regards to CPE providers. To fit within the terms for a CPE to be valid in within these states, the CPE course must meet the criteria of state's minimum guidelines.

Few states request stringent registration of CPE providers. During these times, the CPE provider is issued a registration number by the state which the provider should be shown to students.


What types of CPE is recommended?

States vary in the types of CPE which is acceptable. Naturally, all states allow live CPE study courses. All states do allow CPE self study courses, none the less many states limit credit hours of self study CPE you are allowed to perform and several states separate between the type of self study CPE allowed.

As a rule, states designate self study CPE as attentive or non-attentive CPE. Attentive CPE usually means the CPE course requires the student to answer questions and provide feedback to the student's response.
