If there is one popular deity in Hinduism, then it is Lord Shani Dev. He is the one that Hindus pray to, whenever they want to be rid of obstacles or to be delivered from evil. "Slow Moving One" that is the actual meaning of Shani. Lord Shani Dev overseas the human heart and whatever danger lurks inside one's heart, well that is according to myths.

Lord Shani Dev is pictured as one with relatively dark complexion. He is also said to be Surya's son (Surya is the Sun god) and by Chaya (She is the servant whom Swarma (his wife) fostered. Shani is also Yama's brother (Yama is known as the god of death, Yama is also believed to be Shiva's avatar).

If there is someone whom Hindu's believed to have chopped off the head of Ganesha, then it is Lord Shani Dev. There are lots of stories about his evil influence. Yama and Shani fought a lot when they were kids that explain why he is limping because of his injured knees caused by one of their fights. Shani is being pictured as one who rides a chariot, always with bow and arrow. The chariot is depicted as being pulled by either a crow or vulture. He is known to wear blue cloth, sapphire, and with blue flowers.

Shani is also known by these other names: the son of god or Saura, the cruel eyed or Kruradris, Dull and Slow or Mandu, Disabled or Pangu, Dark or Asita, and Seven-eyed or Saptarchi.

In Vedic astrology, a person's future is being determined by planetary position at the time of one's birth. Unfortunately, Saturn is Shani's planet which is being feared for its bad-luck. Hindu's believes that anyone born under his influence will always be in ill-luck.

Now, if you want to appease him, then you can do so by paying an obeisance every Saturdays. You can do so by lighting a lamp before his image and by reading "Shani Mahatmyaham". He is known to be pleased in accepting lit lamps with mustard oil or sesame oil. Saturday or Shanivara is considered as inauspicious if you are planning to start a new venture.

Lord Shani Dev is also known as the giver of kindness. He is known to grant compassion and kindness to those who believes in him.
