Knockout Power - Punching With Your Feet

By:

The use of the feet in punching is often underplayed or even ignored. This is a big mistake! Although it can seem counter-intuitive the ascertion to "punch with your feet" does not mean kick the other guy! The feet can provide a huge amount of power in the fists.

A more accurate statement would be to request the learner to "punch with your foot" as usually it is one being utilized for each punch. The foot used does not need to match the fist punching. The drive from the feet can come from either foot and power either fist. When learning to punch people often forget about their feet. Instead of contributing to the power generated the foot may get 'stuck' to the floor, drift aimlessly or just about drag toward the target. Whatever, the foot is either contributing nothing or very little to the punch or potentially detracting from the power generated!

In simple terms the feet, or at least one foot, should actively drive the punching motion otherwise the final delivery of force to the target is compromise. The feet should contribute to every punch thrown, by not only driving the fist but directing it also. Correct alignment of the feet toward the target will drive the punch toward it without disrupting balance or working against the body's posture.

If you feet are misaligned to the target it is a bit like walking like a penguin, with your feet stuck out to the side at a wide angle. This is fine for penguins but certainly sub-optimal for humans, if you do not line your body up to the target any power generated at the feet will not be effectively delivered to the target.

Making a person aware of what is occurring at foot level is counter-intuitive to some people and those will likely need help in discerning what is happening there. While others will quickly be able to 'tune in' to their feet and discern what is working or not, as the case may be. The first stage is to 'listen' to the feet the next is to start using them to their potential in the punching action.

Spending the time adn effort required to develop the driving action at the feet is well worth the effort and will enhance your punching power. The improvement in power gleaned from using the feet in punch delivery will take your breath away!
