Keyword Research For Your Internet Marketing Business

Keyword Research For Your Internet Marketing Business

By:

Performing effective keyword research for your new or even established internet marketing business is one of the most important keys to your success or failure in your endeavor. The choices you make can save you years and untold dollars in wasted efforts. Too many times beginning, nave, or simply foolish marketers blunder into "business" without having a sound keyword plan. This is, of course, the kiss of death, as the Web is built on nothing if not keywords. Let's take a look at some of the things you'll want to keep in mind as you do this for yourself.

There are several facets to performing effective keyword research. You should know that this is part CSI, and part art. There is a definite sleuthing that needs to take place, as well as taking into account the human aspect.

The physical searching can take place with the aid of several tools to help you. There are many keyword research products out there, and they can make your life a lot easier in this task. There is always a learning curve associated with them however, and sometimes this is short, and sometimes it's not. But before you go out and spend a ton of money on them, you should know that you can (and should) do the bulk of your sleuthing for free.

The Google Adwords Keyword External Tool (hefty name!) is free and should be your first stop. Other good tools worth looking at include Market Samurai, SEOBook, WordTracker, and a few others. Remember, these are only tools, and don't allow yourself to be seduced by large search counts: you need to make sure that you aren't competing against several million pages first! The first step in doing that is to check the competition by doing a search for your keyword on Google within quotes. This will give you a better, though not entirely definitive, idea of how much competition you're up against. You might also do an allintitle: search, which will tell you how many pages have your keyword in Google's index.

Armed with this type of information, you need to apply the human element. Think of how searchers looking for what you have to offer would search for your site. What sorts of modifiers would they apply to your core keywords to get to your site? For example, if you have a site that is selling auto insurance, ranking for that term would be next to impossible. However, a local modifier may help. If your business is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, then a keyword like "auto insurance Santa Fe" would be much easier to rank for, and get you far more targeted visitors.

One of the best tips I can offer regarding keyword research is to take the time to do it right. If you are totally lost on the concept, or just can't invest the time and effort necessary to do this right, then make sure you outsource it into capable hands. There are many places that will help you, but make sure you have your finger on the pulse of what they're doing: this is your business, and this is far too important to have done poorly.

Keywords are the lifeblood of your internet marketing efforts. Get some great ones!
