Key Issues Nokia's Ceo Forgot To Address During India Visit

By:

In his recent visit to India, Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop seemed the happiest man. Though struggling to combat the attack from multitude of smartphone players, the Finnish phone maker is beating back competition in India.

The rocketing sales of Nokias Dual-SIM phones have given some hope to a brighter future of the company amidst slow growth.

Stephen Elop, who took charge as the company's CEO a year ago, acknowledged the fact that the successful launch of dual-SIM handsets in India has gobbled the market share of existing competitors in this category. Thrilled with the market-performance of these handsets, Elop revealed his plans for introducing more such devices in the country.

In his visit, he also talked about the transition to Windows Phone and the smartphone market in India. He also shed light on challenges which Nokia may face in smartphone arena. Offering low-cost yet feature-rich smartphones, is going to be tough challenge, Elop feels.

Despite discussing many issues, analysts argue Elop played safe during his visit. He forgot to address few key points which could have made the picture clearer for the companys India plans.

Here are few things which tech geeks would have loved to hear from Elops mouth.

What happened to Nokias tie up with HCL?

Two years back, Nokia entered into a joint venture with HCL Infosystems. The alliance was aimed at selling mobile value added services and entertainment content directly to consumers in India. Now, it seems that deal has gone into oblivion leaving consumers in lurch.

Strategy for developers

As Nokia is making a transition from Symbian to Windows mobile, some guidance on strategy for developers would have helped them majorly. Elop did not acknowledge the concerns of Indian developers about how they should work with Nokia over the next few years, espes.

The Finnish mobile maker cannot undervalue the mounting popularity of Android and iOS amongst Indian developers.

Extending payment options for Ovi/Nokia Store

Why is Nokia only offering payment by credit card/debit card in the Ovi Store? This excludes so many people from buying stuff there.

In many countries, there's the possibility for paying via the phone bill (operator billing). Does Nokia have any plans to support other means of payment in the future?

Whats the strategy to beat domestic brands?

Elop didnt address the issue of increasing competition from home-grown players, which are impacting Nokias market share. He just underlined the companys retail network as an advantage, compared to other handset companies. But that cant be the only tactic to beat competition.

Nokias policies for content and services in India

Elop didnt shed any light on what will be Nokias next move after Nokia Mail and Nokia Life Tools. The company experimented with a number of services, including a classifieds product, an Ovi browser, and India is one of the few markets where Ovi Music continues.

Lets hope, in his next visit Stephen Elop maps out a better strategy for India.
