Kelly Blue Book for all

By:

f youâ€'re looking for a second hand, be sure to have a look in the Kelly Blue Book before you get too far into your search. Using the Kelly Blue Book is a fantastic way for you to gauge how much you should pay for the car youâ€'re interested in.

The Kelly Blue Book looks at all angles of used cars and used-car pricing. It tells you how much you should pay for almost every car thatâ€'s ever been made, and is organized in an easy-to-use style by make, model, year of the car and condition.

Be warned that there are a few significant things the Kelly Blue Book isnâ€'t much good for. It doesnâ€'t provide any thought to how dependable a vehicle is, or how problematic it is. You can get some indication of this by gauging how well the car retains its value, but Kelly Blue Book will primarily tell you pricing.

Consumer Reports and Car and Driver will tell you much of what you need to know about a carâ€'s reliability. These two magazines give you tons of useful info about used carsâ€"life expectancy, maintenance expenses, andâ€"point by pointâ€"which segments of the car (e.g. transmission, engine) are likely to need to be repaired or replaced, and which arenâ€'t. I also like epinions.com. Youâ€'ll locate a wide range of information about almost every car thatâ€'s ever been made, written by real people. All of these resources are great because of their thoroughness and neutral bias.

Of course, none of these are enough. The Kelly Blue Book will tell you how much to pay, and Consumer Reports, Car and Driver and epinion will give you strengths and weaknesses of the cars youâ€'re interested in. But we also suggest getting the car looked at by a mechanic you trust. And trust yourself to spot problems on the test drive, even if you donâ€'t know much about cars.
