Keeping Your Medical Records Organized

Keeping Your Medical Records Organized

If you or your child has a complicated medical condition, or you simply have medical records that you would like to keep organized, how do you do it in a manner so that they are not only comprehensive for you and your family, but for your healthcare provider as well? It is imperative to keep medical records organized in such a way that if you or a loved one needs to access them quickly, they can do so, without wasting precious time.

When faced with a medical emergency, your own paper records or your EMR's (emergency medical records) should be at hand so that your healthcare provider can make educated and up to the minute decisions that could prove to be lifesaving. Sometimes, in a medical emergency, minutes can make all the difference in the outcome.

A great way to organize your paper medical records is with a simple filing system. Devise a system that keeps the members of your family in their own separate files. Each file should have tabs for topics like prescriptions, diagnosis, hospital trips and other research.

That way, when one of the members of your family has a medical emergency or needs to visit the emergency room, it is one simple step to grab their corresponding folders and heading out the door. Similarly, if a child needs to go to a routine doctor's appointment, you'll have information such as which immunizations the child has had, what sicknesses he or she has endured the last year, and other pertinent medical information at the ready, in case your health care provider isn't as well organized.

If you are more of the computer type, a great way to keep organized medical records is to use a simple word processing or spreadsheet software in order to keep things in check. Just like a paper file, you can create columns for each type of medical information available.

It's a great idea to keep these records on a portable source, such as a thumb or flash drive or other disk. Back up the information regularly, and then just pop your flash drive into your diaper bag or purse so you have the right information on the go.

EMR's are important to have in any type of medical situation. Having organized and accurate records will help you to keep all of your family's information together and at the ready, when you need it the most.
