Keeping Your Home Comfortable During All Weather

By:

When people are working on remodeling their homes, many times they tend to overlook the insulation in the home. By insulating your home you are making it more energy efficient and easier to maintain a comfortable temperature. There are a few ways that a homeowner can keep their homes at a comfortable temperature, while being more energy efficient at the same time.

Start with the easy things. Make sure any gaps that can let in cold or warm air in are all plugged up to keep the drafts outside. Filling in the gaps is a pretty easy project, very inexpensive and saves energy as well. Start with windows and doors. Look for gaps around doors and use an adhesive backed insulation tape to go around the inside of the door jam. Look for any cracks around the molding of your windows and fill them with a silicone based caulk. It is a simple project and all you need is a couple of tubes of caulk and a caulk gun, which should be part of any homes tool kit.

Once you have checked your doors and windows, you should now check under your sinks and behind your toilets. Any gaps between the incoming pipes and the wall should be filled. Filling these gaps will not stop the cold/hot air to creep in, but it will also keep the rodents and bugs out of your home.

If you have larger gaps that require more than caulking or an insulation strip then you will need to purchase a foam aerosol. This is a compressed foam that you squeeze through a tube and expands in the space to fill in any voids. Although the aerosol foam is great at filling in the gaps, it can be very messy to use, so you want to be sure to only use it in the larger gaps, otherwise you will get it all over the place, and it is not so easy to clean up.

You will also not want to forget to check your attic and crawl spaces. You want to make sure that they are insulated with a pink insulation and that it is at an adequate level. If you want to increase the level of insulation you have a few options. The first is to buy a roll of insulation at your local hardware store, and the second is to hire a professional that offers a spray insulation that is more effective as it can get into the smaller spaces that you are unable to reach.
